How to Make the Most of Every School Visit

A school visit is more than just a tour — it’s an opportunity to observe, connect and reflect. Before you go, take time to research the school’s ethos and values, entry requirements and deadlines, subject offering, enrichment opportunities, and the support available for children with SEN or EAL needs. On the day, pay attention to the atmosphere: do pupils seem happy and confident? Are interactions warm and respectful? Notice whether teachers greet students by name and whether classrooms feel purposeful, not overly silent. Look for active engagement, inclusive displays, and signs of strong pastoral care — such as buddy systems, counsellors or dedicated support for new joiners. Explore the facilities beyond the classroom too, including music, sport, tech and quiet spaces. When possible, ask current pupils what they enjoy most, what they might change, and how they’re supported when facing challenges. Don’t be afraid to ask staff insightful questions, such as how they nurture confidence in high-ability children, what kind of learner might not suit the school, or how wellbeing is tracked alongside academic progress. After the visit, take a moment to reflect: Would my child be seen here? Do the school’s values align with our own? Does the pace feel manageable, and would we feel comfortable asking for help? With the right approach, each visit brings you one step closer to finding the environment where your child will truly thrive.
